  1. @TiaD(first comment). I took it a a surprise and it kind of mad me sad. I hadn't realized how many people were in the thought police and neither had Winston. Although it was to late, Winston finally realized how big their force was.

  2. @Kiley(8:49) I honestly believe we will never know the correct answer to that. There could be 5 thought police among the proles or 100. Although I personally believe that there are quite a few. To me, it always seemed too easy for rebels to hide among everyone else, it would probably be about the same when hiding in a group of rebels.

  3. @Ciara(8:45). I think for us, the readers, it was obvious and slightly predictable. For Winston, I believe it reinforced ideas he already had and brought back memories he may not have remembered without the extra push of the book.

  4. @Matthew(8:57) There are way to many similarities. This has to do with how the book was a prediction for the future..how many of his other predictions came true? (I know no one will respond to this...)

  5. @Kiley(9:00) Big Brother is not a single person. It is a personified idea. The government controls everything but Big Brother is not a person that controls the government. Big Brother is everywhere. The idea 'Big Brother is watching you" is not talking about a single person, it's talking about every person who it loyal to the government. Big Brother is your neighbor, your co-worker, your child. Big Brother is anyone who is willing to tell on you for even the slightest crime. "Big Brother is Watching You" doesn't mean a single person or group is recording you!

  6. @TiaD(9:02) It keeps switching because their economy needs war to thrive. When one war starts getting boring, its on to the next one!

  7. @Kiley(9:09) We are picturing the man on the poster. Although, even if there weren't posters we would picture a man because his title is Big Brother, it implies a boy.

  8. Samantha (9:11) So you picture Hitler? or maybe Stalin? Is there a coincidence that you picture him similar to two evil dictators?

  9. @Kiley (8:46) I agree with you. I was surprised that Mr. Charrington was a part of the thought police. It makes me wonder if they knew that Winston would end up in the store ahead of time, therefore setting this up long before Winston even meet Julia. Or was it just a coincidence that he picked this store and they were able to have thought police there to spy on them?

  10. @Joseph L. (8:55) Do you think that, even if they rebelled successfully, the people of the inner party, and the proles would be able to compromise and create a new government? Do you think they would even want a new government considering the only government they knew brainwashed them and tortured them?

  11. @Abigail H. (8:48) Why does this not surprise you? For me I never would have thought the Thought Police would be with the proles. The government acts as if they are not even part of the society, why would they care to put thought police there if they don't even care about the people?

  12. @Kiley (8:58) I think Winston is to trusting of other people. He goes with his gut feeling about O'Brian, but Winston, just by living in the society, is affect by the way the government runs the country. I think his gut feeling is affected by this, therefore I would not put this much trust in O'Brain without more proof.

  13. @Maggie J. (9:05) I think that the government does want war. If you look back in History whenever there was a war the whole country got together to fund it. If they can have a "war" forever then the people would fund the government forever.

  14. @Maggie J. (9:10) Why do you think the government has not overpowered its opponents? If the war is real what is there to gain by a prolonged steal mate? Or can they simply not over power the other countries?

  15. @Elizabeth W. (9:21) If this is true, children are chosen young for their jobs, then Winston was chosen so that after his torture he could go back to his life and show love for Big Brother. It shows all the people who knew him that even those who don't express there love for Big Brother enough eventually turn in favor of the government.

  16. @Kiley (9:19) I think the kids wanting to go see the hanging is a lot like kids playing violent video games. The only difference is that virtual people are dying vs. real people are dying. The kids are seeing the same violence.
